The Norway Massacre and Europe’s War on Free Speech

Media outlets in Europe and the United States are accusing Western critics of Islam and multiculturalism of complicity in the mass killing of more than 70 people in Norway. The attempt to exploit this crime for political gain is not just a case of malicious opportunism. It also represents the latest and most unsavoury salvo in the long-running war on free speech in Europe.

Anders Behring Breivik, a deranged Norwegian accused of bombing government buildings in Oslo and then killing scores of young people during a 90-minute shooting rampage on a nearby camping island called Utoya, published a 1,500-page manifesto in which he vents his anger at the direction in which mostly leftwing elites in Norway and elsewhere in Europe are leading his country and the continent as a whole.

As it turns out, parts of the manifesto include cut-and-pasted blog posts from European and American analysts and writers who for years have been educating the general public about the destructive effects of multiculturalism and runaway Muslim immigration. By dint of duplicitous logic, these analysts and writers are now the victims of a smear campaign: multiculturalists are accusing them of inciting Breivik to murder.

These same analysts have, of course, been a constant bane on an unaccountable European elite determined to foist its post-modern, post-nationalist and post-Christian multicultural agenda on a sceptical European citizenry.

Unwilling to countenance opposition, these self-appointed guardians of European political correctness have laboured to silence public discussion about issues such as the rise of Islam in Europe and/or the failure of millions of Muslim immigrants to integrate into European society.

The primary weapon in this war on free speech has been lawfare: the malicious use of European courts to criminalize criticism of Islam.

Prosecutions of so-called anti-Islam hate speech are now commonplace in Europe. Some of the more well-known efforts to silence debate about Islam in Europe have involved high-profile individuals like Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician, and Brigitte Bardot, a French animal rights activist.

Other recent assaults on free speech in Europe include the show trials of: Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff, a housewife in Austria, Susanne Winter, a politician in Austria, Lars Hedegaard, a journalist in Denmark, Jesper Langballe, a politician in Denmark, Jussi Kristian Halla-aho, a politician in Finland, Michel Houellebecq, a novelist in France, Gregorius Nekschot, the pseudonym of a cartoonist in the Netherlands, and the late Oriana Fallaci, a journalist and author in Italy.

In other cases, physical violence has been the preferred method of silencing contrary views of Islam in Europe. In 2002, for example, Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn was assassinated for his views on Muslim immigration, and in 2004, Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was stabbed to death for producing a movie that criticized Islam. In 2010, Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard narrowly escaped being assassinated by an axe-wielding Muslim extremist in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.

Many theories attempt to explain the rise of multiculturalism in Europe. Among these is the idea that European elites, determined to prevent a repeat of the carnage of the Second World War, embraced multiculturalism as a tool to try to dilute or even eliminate the national ethnic, religious and or/cultural identities that contributed to centuries of violence in Europe.

But in recent years, the secular purveyors of European multiculturalism have moved far beyond their initial objective of creating an American-style “melting pot.” European socialists now view multiculturalism as a means to eliminate the entire Judeo-Christian worldview. This is certainly the case in Spain, where socialists have joined arms with Islam in a “Red-Green Alliance” to confront a common enemy, Christianity, as represented, in this case, by the Roman Catholic Church.

To be sure, decades of multiculturalism and Muslim immigration have already transformed Europe in ways unimaginable only a few decades ago. In Britain, for example, Muslims currently are campaigning to turn twelve British cities — including what they call “Londonistan” — into independent Islamic states. The so-called Islamic Emirates would function as autonomous enclaves ruled by Islamic Sharia law and operate entirely outside British jurisprudence. More than 80 Sharia courts are already operating in the country. At the same time, Mohammed is now the most common name for baby boys.

In France, large swaths of Muslim neighbourhoods are now considered “no-go” zones by French police. At last count, there are 751 Sensitive Urban Zones (Zones Urbaines Sensibles, ZUS), as they are euphemistically called. An estimated 5 million Muslims live in the ZUS, parts of France over which the French state has lost control.

In Germany, anti-Semitism (which is often disguised as anti-Zionism), has reached levels not seen since the Second World War. An April 2011 report, for example, found that 47.7% of Germans believe “Israel is conducting a war of extermination against the Palestinians,” and nearly 50% of Germans believe “Jews try to take advantage of having been victims of the Nazi era.”

In Norway, large sections of Oslo are being turned into Muslim enclaves subject to Sharia law and to the dictates of local imams. The citizens of Oslo are also struggling to cope with an epidemic of rapes. According to recent statistics, 100% of aggravated sexual assaults which resulted in rapes over the past three years were carried out by Muslim immigrants. Norwegians are now trying to deal with the large-scale torching of automobiles, which, as in France, is being attributed to Muslim youth.

In a Wall Street Journal essay titled “Inside the Mind of the Oslo Murderer,” Bruce Bawer, an American analyst who lives in Oslo, writes: “Norway, like the rest of Europe, is in serious trouble. Millions of European Muslims live in rigidly patriarchal families in rapidly growing enclaves where women are second-class citizens, and where non-Muslims dare not venture. Surveys show that an unsettling percentage of Muslims in Europe reject Western values, despise the countries they live in, support the execution of homosexuals, and want to replace democracy with Sharia law. (According to a poll conducted by the Telegraph, 40% of British Muslims want Sharia implemented in predominantly Muslim parts of the United Kingdom.)”

Bawer describes Norway as a country that stands out for its refusal to confront any of the real dangers posed by Islamic radicalism. He also says the failure of mainstream political leaders to responsibly address the challenges posed by Muslim immigration has contributed to the emergence of extremists like Breivik. Pressure cookers without a safety valve eventually will explode.

Bawer writes: “In bombing those government buildings and hunting down those campers, Breivik was not taking out people randomly. He considered the Labour Party, Norway’s dominant party since World War II, responsible for policies that are leading to the Islamization of Europe — and thus guilty of treason. The Oslo bombing was intended to be an execution of the party’s current leaders. The massacre at the camp — where young would-be politicians gathered to hear speeches by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland — was meant to destroy its next generation of leaders.”

The question remains: in the aftermath of the attack, will the Norwegian left rethink its non-interventionist approach to Islam and Muslim immigration? In a number of other European countries, governments on the center-right have been doing an about-face on multiculturalism.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have all declared in recent months that multiculturalism has failed. In June, the Dutch government announced it would abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands. In Spain, the conservative Popular Party, which is widely expected to win the next general election, has promised to enact new measures that will require all immigrants to learn the Spanish language to obtain residency permits.

Some analysts say these measures are too little too late. But one thing seems clear: European multiculturalists are feeling some unfamiliar political heat. After decades of high-handed stifling of debate, the gradual unravelling of multiculturalism in Europe explains the obsessive zeal with which many are exploiting the Norwegian tragedy.

By falsely accusing conservatives of complicity in a crime in which they had no part, multiculturalists are seeking to delegitimize and silence criticism of their social re-engineering scheme. But they are unlikely to succeed as the consequences of their worldview are becoming clear for all to see.

Melanie Phillips: Fanaticism, mass murder and the left

Melanie Phillips: Fanaticism, mass murder and the left
26 July 2011

In the wake of the Norway atrocity and the reaction it has generated, I have
been thinking some more about hatred, fanaticism and moral confusion.

This shouldn’t need saying, but it does: there can be no excuse,
justification or rationale whatsoever for the atrocity perpetrated by Anders
Behring Breivik. The reason it unfortunately needs saying is that I have
been reading too many weaselly equivocations about this, along the lines of
‘Yes, it was indeed a most terrible atrocity and one’s heart bleeds for
those poor victims; but Norway’s politics towards Israel do stink/Norway’s
Labour Party stinks/Quisling’s country, say no more/the Islamisation of
Europe stinks/it was only a matter of time before someone was provoked by
the railroading of public opinion into doing something like this’.

No, no, no! Any variety of such ‘yes-buttery’ inescapably makes some kind of
excuse for the atrocity, however dressed up it may be in suitably pious
expressions of horror. There is never any justification for mass murder.
None. Any concerns about the Norwegian ambassador to Israel’s disgusting
comments or European Islamisation or anything else are a totally separate
matter and must be addressed through the democratic process of argument,
persuasion and public debate.

Not only can mass murder never be excused, but the notion that ‘it was only
a matter of time before someone was provoked into doing something like this’
is itself as nonsensical as it is obscene. Yes, there are a lot of people in
Europe who are angry — very angry indeed — about a whole host of things.
Some of them are decent people who are boiling with rage at being
disenfranchised by an entire political class which seems determined to
destroy their civilisation. Some of them have deeply unpleasant or racist
views about some of their fellow human beings. Some of them are so angry
they may join political groupings which resort on occasion to thuggery and
hooliganism (the BNP, EDL or the anti-globalisation riots all come to mind).
But violent as some of their behaviour may be, they would not travel to a
youth camp, invite the teenagers to gather round and then open fire on them
all with dum-dum bullets.

The suggestion that Breivik’s behaviour resulted from political rage – let
alone from reading thinkers such as John Locke, John Stuart Mill or Winston
Churchill – is frankly itself an opinion in need of treatment. The man is
either in the grip of a psychosis or he is a psychopath – in other words, a
grossly abnormal personality incapable of human feelings of empathy (my
money is on the latter). What he himself says about his own opinions or
state of mind therefore does not bear examination. Yet throughout the west,
apparently intelligent people have been not only ascribing to him rational
thought processes but have been poring over his own words to extract clues
about what made him do this. Repeat after me very slowly: Breivik did not
murder dozens of teenagers because he was ideologically opposed to cultural
Marxism; he mowed them down because he was grossly mentally abnormal.

In the Wall Street Journal, Bret Stephens makes a useful point – and also
explains why the frenzy of demonisation being directed at writers and
thinkers who were name-checked in Breivik’s ‘manifesto’ is quite so vile, as
well as deeply stupid. Observing that Breivik was neither Christian nor
conservative but intended to detonate an apocalypse, Stephens writes about
this particular pathology:

What it is is millennarian: the belief that all manner of redemptive
possibilities lie on just the other side of a crucible of unspeakable chaos
and suffering. At his arrest, Breivik called his acts ‘atrocious but
necessary.’ Stalin and other Marxists so despised by Breivik might have said
the same thing about party purges or the liquidation of the kulaks.

These are the politics that have largely defined our age and which
conservatives have, for the most part, been foremost in opposing. To attempt
to tar them with Breivik’s name is worse than a slur; it’s a concession to a
killer with pretensions of intellectual sophistication. And it’s a
misunderstanding of what he was all about.

Indeed. That’s why the relationship between even ultra-nationalistic
thinking and acts of terror is very different indeed from the relationship
between Islamist radicalism and Islamic acts of terror. The former is
characterised by terrorism perpetrated in pursuit of discrete and limited
aims. The latter aims to effect an apocalypse in order to bring about the
perfection of the world. The former may be appalling in its effects but is
nevertheless fundamentally rational since its goal, however noxious, is
achievable. The latter is fundamentally irrational since its goal is a
utopian fantasy. Consequently those who are in the grip of millenarian
apocalyptic fantasies tend to be lunatics or psychopaths; and so it is as
ridiculous to ascribe the pathologically murderous behaviour of Breivik to
political rage as it would be to do so in the case of Stalin, Hitler or
Ahmadinejad.

There is however yet another aspect of the millenarian mindset which should
not be overlooked. In my book The World Turned Upside Down: The Global
Battle over God, Truth and Power I consider at some length the millenarian
fantasies not just of modern-day Islamists but also of the modern left. (I
owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Richard Landes, who generously talked
me through millenarian theories when I was writing my book some two years
ago and whose own magnificent book on the subject, Heaven on Earth: The
Varieties of Millennial Experience, has just been published.)

All the totemic creeds of today’s ‘progressive’ classes  —
environmentalism, egalitarianism, multiculturalism, anti-Zionism and so on
— are millenarian, in that they all posit in their different ways the
perfection of the world (just like, in their time, the Inquisition,
Stalinism and fascism).

Consequently, today’s militantly secular leftists display some astonishing
similarities to both modern-day Islamists and medieval Christian fanatics.
There is the same belief in the Revealed Truth – Revealed, that is, to them
alone – from which no-one is permitted to dissent. Anyone who denies it is a
heretic and has to be destroyed. Because the left believes it embodies
virtue — on account of its desire to perfect the world – anyone who
dissents or opposes it is evil. Because it is Manichean, all who are not
left-wing are right-wing (even if they are in fact liberal). So all who
oppose the left are evil right-wingers who must be destroyed. That to
leftists is a moral project.

They are therefore in effect a modern secular Inquisition. They are in the
same mould as the religious and political totalitarian tyrannies of the
past; they make in this respect common cause with the Islamists whose agenda
poses a mortal threat to their own lives and liberties and most cherished
beliefs; and they share the characteristic of a closed thought system which
is totally impervious to reason and destroys all who challenge it with the
monsters of history and Anders Behring Breivik.

That is surely why the left seized upon the Norway atrocity with demented
joy and detonated a terrifying eruption of distortion and demonisation,
irrationality, hatred and sheer blood-lust as it saw in the ravings of
Anders Behring Breivik the mother and father of all smears which it could
use to crush those who refuse to surrender to cultural totalitarianism.  So
those of us who fight for life, liberty and western civilisation against
their enemies found ourselves – and by implication, the many millions who
share these mainstream views – grotesquely damned as accessories to mass
murder by those who actually cheer on religious fascists and genocidal
madmen and who are set upon silencing all who resist.

The appalling actions of a Norwegian psychopath tell us next to nothing
about our society. But the reaction to that atrocity tells us a great deal
more.

‘No porn or prostitution’: Islamic extremists set up Sharia law controlled zones in British cities

Posted by paulipoldie on July 28, 2011

This has nothing to do with Islam, right?

From Daily Mail

Rebecca Cramer, July 28, 2011

Islamic extremists have launched a poster campaign across the UK proclaiming areas where Sharia law enforcement zones have been set up.

Communities have been bombarded with the posters, which read: ‘You are entering a Sharia-controlled zone – Islamic rules enforced.’

The bright yellow messages daubed on bus stops and street lamps have already been seen across certain boroughs in London and order that in the ‘zone’ there should be ‘no gambling’, ‘no music or concerts’, ‘no porn or prostitution’, ‘no drugs or smoking’ and ‘no alcohol’.

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary has claimed responsibility for the scheme, saying he plans to flood specific Muslim and non-Muslim communities around the UK and ‘put the seeds down for an Islamic Emirate in the long term’.

In the past week, dozens of streets in the London boroughs of Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Newham have been targeted, raising fears that local residents may be intimidated or threatened for flouting ‘Islamic rules’.

The “Non-Existent” Islamization of America

Posted by paulipoldie on July 6, 2011

The “Non-Existent” Islamization of America

Below is a brief report on some of the peripheral events that occurred during Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff’s recent visit to Washington D.C.

ACT for America logo
The “Non-Existent” Islamization of America
by Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff

As the Baron has been reporting for the past couple of days, he and I attended the ACT! For America National Conference in Washington DC. From June 22 through June 24.

Apart from “official” business such as the meeting with Congressman Allen West and collecting donations for my defense fund, I was able to catch up with some friends from various ACT! chapters who came in from across the nation. In addition, I spent a day in my favorite outlet mall in Woodbridge, VA.

On the last day of the conference, I had dinner with chapter leaders from Michigan and Texas. We decided on an Indian restaurant near the hotel: “Rajaji Curry House” on Connecticut Avenue. The still ongoing happy hour and the mouth-watering menu made our decision to spend the evening in this restaurant particularly easy. As we sat down, we immediately ordered our drinks and some appetizers while perusing the menu in detail. The menu did indeed promise good food. However, while the others chatted I took a closer look at the menu and imagine my shock and horror when — on the very last page and in fine print — the menu read: “We serve halal food.”

I cried out: “Sorry, you guys, but we have to get out of here! I cannot eat halal food. I am leaving. Now.”

The others immediately concurred with my decision. We motioned for the waiter and told him we would pay only for our drinks; the food order was canceled as the food was halal. The waiter was only very mildly indignant. He obviously realized that we knew exactly what halal meant. We ran outside and had an excellent meal across the street at an Irish pub. Very definitely not halal!

I always spend the early part of the day of my flight home at an outlet mall. Like last year, my destination was Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, Virginia. Imagine my dismay when this year I saw this huge banner displayed in the mall, one that wasn’t there a year ago:

Potomac Mills Halal
The Petra Grill, as in Petra, Jordan. Halal food has now arrived at Potomac Mills Mall. And how many of those thousands of shoppers know what “halal” means? How many would even boycott the mall or protest if they did know?

And why do so many still insist that there is no Islamization of America?

This monster is staring us in the face, ready to devour us whole. Get up and do something about it! Support ACT! for America.

Bat Ye’or: On Geert Wilders’s Acquittal

On Geert Wilders’s Acquittal
by Bat Ye’or
July 5, 2011 at 5:00 am

The acquittal of Geert Wilders has deeper meanings for Europe’s future than
it appears at first glance. As Geert Wilders said: it is a victory for
truth. But what does truth mean in international policy? Do we not see that
in Eurabia the words ‘justice and peace’ are travesties for submission to
injustice and terrorism? Here one needs to know the extensive system of lies
spread at every political and cultural level in Eurabia, to understand the
Copernican revolution achieved by Geert Wilders. A victory performed by a
single unarmed man, constantly threatened by death and whose only defence
was his courageous and unbending commitment to say the truth. A truth buried
by the whole Eurabian transnational and international system created since
the 1970s.

Imposed on Europeans by controlling networks such a system emanates from the
European Commission whose masters are no other than the political leaders of
the European governments. The EU, a mastodon Kafkaesque structure, consuming
astronomical sums, often enables European leaders to implement an
authoritarian policy escaping people’s awareness. Rivalries for power,
ambitions, ideology, oppose Eurocrats to those they disdainfully call
“racist, populist, xenophobic” opponents to their globalist Islamophile
ideology. Yet there is more than usual policy into these clashes. There is
what Wilders calls: the truth, a human moral element.

To understand the tremendous revolution achieved by Geert Wilders, one has
to realise that the foundational stone of the Eurabian mind consist of two
principles stated in article 22 of the 1990 Cairo Declaration on Human
Rights in Islam:

a. Everyone shall have the right to express his opinion freely in such
manner as would not be contrary to the principles of the Shari’a.

b. Everyone shall have the right to advocate what is right, and
propagate what is good, and warn against what is wrong and evil according to
the norms of Islamic Shari’a.

Europe, while claiming to defend human rights has, in effect, adopted these
principles and obeys a fundamental law of dhimmitude: dhimmis are forbidden
on pain of death to propagate ideas considered hostile to Islam. Qadi ‘Iyad
(d. 1149), the famous Andalusian Imam, prolific author and scholar,
described explicitly blasphemy. It consists in cursing Muhammad, blaming him
or attributing imperfection to him, to his religion, whether in the form of
a curse, contempt or belittling him or maligning him. He stated that any Jew
or Christian who reviled the Prophet should be beheaded or burned, unless he
converts. Under the pressure of the Organization of the Islamic Conference,
Eurabia has adopted these Islamic blasphemy rules.

The dhimmi attitude that has developed among European intellectuals,
politicians, and the clergy requires the Western public to conform to one of
the basic rules of dhimmitude: the express prohibition on Christians and
Jews to criticize Islamic history and doctrine. This means that shari’a law
has been imposed on Europeans by their own dhimmi leaders in their outreach
to Islam. No wonder that since the 1970s Eurocrats censor any criticism of
jihad and incriminate Israel’s right to exist as an aggression, triggering
wars and terrorism. The denial of the jihadist current trend by Europe, its
compliance to shari’a laws by prosecuting and punishing its own citizens for
criticizing them, constitute the basic issues of Wilders trial. By exposing
them, he has overturned EU’s policy.

In this tremendous fight for truth, Wilders is not alone. Many sacrificed
their position and reputation, many despaired such as the sociologist
Jacques Ellul (d. 1994) who saw the return of Nazism in a machinery
disguising its Fascist authoritarianism and antisemitism with the words
‘peace, justice, love, human rights’.

Can Wilders and his courageous supporters – each fighting in his own country
against their dhimmi leaders – succeed in bringing some morality into a
sordid policy of lies, corruption, hate and cowardice? Or could this success
for truth be just a moment of light and hope before being crushed? Will
Muslims themselves take this opportunity offered by the sacrifices of
Wilders and the young anti-racist militants for freedom of speech, to ponder
upon their own history of a long genocidal jihad over four continents with
its trail of enslavement and dispossession of people? We are waiting to hear
them acknowledging that jihadist ideology is criminal and that dhimmitude is
a dehumanising oppression.

Now, the world sees the fanatical and revolting persecution of Copts and
other Christians in Islamic countries, and the jihadist genocidal hatred
against Israel. And Now, Jews, Christians, Hindus and others victims of
Islamic wars, who suffered dispossession, apartheid, deportations,
humiliations, child abductions – crimes perpetrated altogether within the
context of dhimmitude – are hoping for a reconciliation that can only come
with Muslim acknowledgement of a criminal supremacist ideology and its
rejection.

Germany on the Brink

Posted by paulipoldie on June 8, 2011

In Stuttgart, Germany, last week, violent Leftist and Islamic supremacist demonstrators violently menaced anti-jihad activists – giving a sobering picture of where Germany, Europe, and the U.S. as well are headed if we don’t stand up and resolutely defend our freedom now.

Thursday afternoon I spoke in Stuttgart at the invitation of the human rights group Pax Europa. The event was well advertised, and so the thuggish Leftist/Islamic supremacist alliance mobilized and was out in full force.

About a thousand protesters from the frequently violent hard-Left Antifa group showed up, along with around 500 German riot police. “Antifa” stands for “Anti-fascism,” but if any fascism was on display, it was from the “anti-fascists,” who did their best to destroy the Pax Europa event. They were menacing people, starting fights, banging drums, blowing whistles, and chanting Leftist and Communist agitprop slogans. One young man from Antifa came up to me as I was standing right in front of a line of German police and said, “You’re lucky there are so many police here today.” He was not expressing solidarity.

Pax Europa had planned a full program featuring Middle Eastern Christian musicians, a Coptic Christian activist, and others, so as to highlight the hollowness of the Islamic supremacist narrative of Muslim victimhood and anti-jihadist racism. But the police ordered the Pax Europa organizers to drastically reduce the scope of their event. Everyone was restricted to ten minutes only. Several participants opted not to appear, in light of the manifest danger. Antifa people were attacking supporters of Pax Europa. I saw several individuals being chased by rabid Leftist gangs. At least one man went to the hospital.

The police used loudspeakers to call on Antifa twice to disperse, as Pax Europa had lawfully reserved the space for their event. The Antifa people responded only by moving forward, chanting slogans, banging their drums, and holding aloft the usual Leftist kitsch — Che Guevara, the hammer and sickle, the Palestinian flag, signs denouncing Islamophobia, etc. The police moved them back a bit but did not ask them again to disperse, and allowed the Pax Europa event to begin.

It was an incredible din. We had loudspeakers that appeared to be able to reach the considerable crowd behind the protesters, but the Antifa thugs did all they could to drown us out: the drums got louder, the vuvuzelas came out, they were blowing whistles, and of course they were screaming and yelling. They also started throwing things: bottles, ice eggs, excrement and more. One bottle narrowly missed the Coptic activist’s head and crashed onto the stage — other bottles crashed at our feet. Several speakers were hit with eggs. The manure they threw was all over the stage floor.

It was like looking into the pit of hell. Here were young people passionately committed to their cause and believing it to be that of justice and freedom, and they are eager and willing useful idiots for the most radically intolerant ideology on the planet. So when my turn came to speak, I addressed them, and told them just that. I told them they wouldn’t like what happened to them when their friends took power, but by then it would be too late for them.

The menace continued. Antifa burned the truck belonging to the company that set up the stage for Pax Europa’s Thursday rally. Friday night they found out the hotel that the courageous anti-jihad politician René Stadtkewitz was planning to stay in when he came to Stuttgart to announce the founding of the local branch of his new Freedom Party; they reportedly broke the hotel’s windows and painted threatening messages on its walls. Also yesterday, I spoke to a Pax Europa meeting at a location in Stuttgart; Antifa thugs found out the location after the meeting had ended, and stormed and surrounded the place. Thirty-six were arrested.

But it is not too late for Europe. I spoke at Stadtkewitz’s Freedom Party event on Sunday, and found a crowd made all the more resolute and determined by the violent intimidation to which they had been subjected. They realize that freedom hangs in the balance today in Germany, and in Europe and the U.S. as well, and they’re prepared to take a stand.

That was a great source of hope. Saturday morning I had the great honor of meeting with Susanne Zeller-Hirzel, one of the last surviving members of the White Rose, the nonviolent resistance movement that worked against Hitler’s regime in Nazi Germany in 1942 and 1943. We discussed numerous parallels between the Nazi era in Germany and the advance of Islamic supremacism today — as we saw in Stuttgart Thursday, Nazis and Islamic supremacists are remarkably similar in their taste for using force to shut down opponents they can’t out-argue.

It’s time for the White Rose to flower again in Germany. And as Islamic supremacism continues to advance in the U.S. also, we are not far behind.

Sharia Alert: Luxury hotels compete for the Muslim market

Posted by paulipoldie on June 4, 2011

Catering to a growing Islamic clientele means no mini bar, and no flirting.

by Mona Alami

Global Post.com

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In the West, in many hotels, it is common to find the King James Bible next to the bed. In Muslim-majority countries, of course, it is common to find the Quran.

But some hotel owners across the Middle East are taking it a step further, designing entire hotels that cater specifically to Muslim guests by adhering to Shariah — or Islamic — law.

It is a market, they say, that is both huge and largely untapped.

“There is a growing need for Shariah-compliant hotels, which are sought after by Arab Muslim travelers,” said Naji Morcos, director of Hodema, a Lebanese consultant company specializing in hospitality.

In Dubai, there are several high-end, luxury hotels that have forgone the Cristal to comply with Shariah. The towering buildings, nestled among tall palm trees, have all the signs of Arab luxury — the aroma of rich Arabic coffee mixed with the pungent scent of dates, lush interiors and white marble floors.

On the upper floors, however, ostentatious suites flaunt not mini bars but praying rooms. It is a trend that is spreading across the wider Middle East.

Morcos said that Arab travelers spend more than $12 billion annually on holiday travel. According to a study published by MiddleEast.com, about 88 percent of Arab travelers said they would be interested in staying in an Islamic hotel.

“Shariah-compliant hotels basically adhere to the same restrictions that are adopted in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia. The only difference is that they are now popping up in countries where conventional hotels are usually allowed,” Morcos said.

Such hotels serve only non-alcoholic beverages and halal food and ban movies and TV channels that are considered lewd. Even some hotels that don’t follow Shariah principles strictly are adjusting to meet the demands of a more religiously conservative clientele.

“At the Rotana Arjaan, we simply don’t offer alcohol on our property. The food and beverages served are also 100 percent halal and alcohol-free. We respect the different beliefs and cultures and try to be as sensitive and understanding as possible to our guests’ needs,” said Mark Deere, general manager of Arjaan by Rotana in Dubai.

True Islamic hotels, however, attempt to comply with Shariah in every way possible.

“Segregation between men and women is practiced in Shariah-compliant hotels, with certain floors [serviced by female staff] reserved exclusively for female guests,” Morcos said.

This restriction is also applied to other “sensitive areas,” such as the ballroom, gym and pool.

Shariah compliant hotels also tend to rely on Islamic financing for their investments and allocate a portion of their profits to charities in order to fulfill Zakat, which is one of the central tenets of Islam and stipulates that individuals should earmark at least 2.5 percent of their net worth to charity every year.

But running Shariah hotels is not without its challenges. Conventional hotels often make 30 percent of their revenue from the sale of alcohol and food. Their Shariah counterparts, on the other hand, make about 10 percent.

“Shariah-compliant hotels face many challenges. For example, more of an investment is needed than for a normal hotel because of the duplication of some areas [such as different entrances and corridors leading to female and male floors]. Rack rates are also typically higher than in conventional hotels,” Morcos said.

This effort to appeal to such a niche market is taking hospitality to a whole new creative level.

“Shariah-compliant hotels provide a service that is detailed from the beginning to the end, from separate entrances to the individual Qurans that are placed in each room,” Morcos said.

Five Interesting Historical Facts About Islam

Five Interesting Historical Facts About Islam

Thanks to Citizen Warrior

WHILE READING about things totally unrelated to the counterjihad movement, I have occasionally come across some interesting historical facts about Islam. I was surprised to discover that Islam had a hand in many important historical events I already knew about without ever knowing Islam had anything to do with them. Here are a few of the most interesting:

1. The creation of the U.S. Marine Corps was initiated in response to Islamic warriors. The Barbary Coast pirates were following in Mohammad’s footsteps, raiding caravans (in this case, oceangoing ships), taking slaves, capturing people to hold for ransom, and demanding “protection money” from any kafirs who didn’t want to be raided. This had been going on for centuries along the North African Mediterranean coastline.

Any ships that wanted to do business in the Mediterranean were at risk. Many European countries did the easy thing and paid the protection money to the Muslims to avoid being raided, which, of course, helped fund their operations against anyone who wasn’t paying. The U.S. did not have enough military resources to protect its ships, so it paid the protection money too. This bothered Thomas Jefferson. Before he was president, when he was an ambassador to France, Jefferson had a chance to meet with an ambassador from Tripoli, and he asked why Tripoli did this. The Muslim explained it was written in the Koran.

So Thomas Jefferson did something every leader of the free world should do: He bought himself a Koran and read it. Then when he became president, he knew what he needed to do: He formed the United States Navy, created the Marine Corps, and sent them to the shores of Tripoli, where they soundly defeated the Muslim warriors.

This was the first foreign war fought by the United States. America’s victory was the beginning of the end of the “Barbary Coast Pirates.” The military aggressiveness of Islamic countries remained contained and weakened for over a century.

Read more about that here: Why Did President Jefferson Read the Quran?

2. The New World was discovered because of Islam. Christopher Columbus was looking for a new trade route to the East. But why was he looking for a trade route?

During the Second Jihad, Islam invaded Central Asia and defeated Constantinople in 1453, cutting off the overland route for Europeans. Islamic armies continued their jihad northward, and conquered much of what is now Eastern Europe, until they were finally stopped at the gates of Vienna in 1683. Read more: The Second Major Wave of Jihad: the Turks, 1071-1683.

Europe had been trading with the Far East for centuries, and their old overland route now went through territory that was hostile and dangerous to anybody but Muslims. The economy of Europe was threatened.

So, in 1492, the year Islam was finally defeated in Spain, ending Islam’s 780-year occupation, Columbus set off to find a passage to the Far East by boldly sailing West into the unknown. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

3. The .45 caliber 1911 semiautomatic pistol was created to stop Islamic warriors. From 1902 until 1913, the United States fought a war with the “Moro Warriors” in the Philippines. These Islamic warriors were named “Moros” by the Spanish. Their unstoppability was legendary. “In one instance,” writes Robert Boatman, “a Moro warrior received 14 bullet wounds in five minutes, three of which penetrated his brain, and yet he fought on.”

At the time the army was using .38 caliber guns, which were unable to stop the Moros, so in 1906, they began testing different guns to find something better. In 1911, they chose the .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. It had enough stopping power to kill even a Moro warrior with one shot. 4. The Great Pyramid of Giza looks unfinished because of Muslims. The pyramid was once covered by a smooth, beautifully polished layer of white stone. This outer layer was removed by Muslims, who used the white stone for mosques and palaces, leaving the ancient pyramids with their somewhat unfinished appearance.

The physicist, John Zajac, wrote: “This protective covering was made up of…hard, white limestone, similar to marble but superior in hardness and in durability against the elements…The casing stones, 144,000 in all, were so brilliant that they could literally be seen from the mountains of Israel hundreds of miles away…The people of the area had viewed the pyramid and its polished stones with awe for centuries. But when a 13th century earthquake loosened some of these casing stones, the Arabs recognized a great quarry of precut stones that could be used to finish off palaces and mosques. For instance, the casing stones were used to rebuild the new city of El Kaherah plus Cairo mosques and palaces, including the Mosque of Sultan Hasan.”

Historically, this is Islamic standard operating procedure. Wherever Islam established itself throughout the world, it destroyed or defaced monuments that represented the previous (conquered) culture and replaced it with Islamic structures and mosques. Afghanistan used to be Buddhist. Turkey used to be Christian. Pakistan used to be Hindu. The former cultures and any symbols of them were annihilated and replaced by Islam.

5. The Crusades were a limp, late, defensive response to four hundred years of Islamic war against what was then largely Christian lands (the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Europe). Four of the five main centers of Christianity, including the Byzantium and Constantiople, were eventually conquered by the Islamic warriors’ relentless conquests, and the countries were forcibly converted into Islamic states. But before the Crusades, Byzantium was still fighting to defend itself, and repeatedly appealed to Rome for help.

The different nations of Europe were largely competitors with each other. They were not a united force — far from it — but the Pope thought he could unify Europeans if he made it a matter of “defending Christians,” so that’s how he made his appeal. It helped unite Europeans against a common threat, and it may have saved Europe from the forcible Islamization suffered by the nations of the Middle East, part of India, and North Africa. Here’s another interesting historical tidbit about Islam’s influence: The defense of Europe during the Crusades was devastatingly expensive, and the Church of Rome tried many ways to raise funds. Some of these fundraising efforts were deeply offensive to Martin Luther, so he intitiated the Protestant Reformation.

Islam has had a profound impact on important historical events throughout its history, and it is still being felt today.

Must-Read-Book: The Martyr’s Prize: Inspired by True Events

The Martyr’s Prize: Inspired by True Events

Citizen Warrior

I DON’T USUALLY read fiction, but someone I respect recommended The Martyr’s Prize to me, and I just finished it. I liked it a lot. And oddly enough, I felt that the book brought to life the reality of our situation better than dry factual data has ever done.

One “scene” in the story especially affected me; a conversation between a Saudi prince and a young mujahadeen. Their conversation actually kept me awake late into the night, thinking about it.
The mujahadeen only knew about and understood the “hard jihad.” But the prince sat him down and laid out the full picture — the carrot and stick of Islamization. On the one side, “life must be made impossible” for the non-Muslims, and they must be in constant fear of their lives; and on the other side, give them a path to peace — submitting to the rule of Islam.

The invasion must be simultaneous on all fronts, explains the prince. Speak publicly of peace, but attack anyone who even implies you have “unsavory associations.” Buy friends at the newspapers. Use the courts to harass. Make trouble for criticizers.

“At that moment something clicked,” and the young mujahadeen “suddenly understood the brilliance of the plan. A jihad that could never be defeated because it would be all encompassing; everywhere at once. No focal point to attack with Western military might. Immune, because the West would never engage in genocide; would never outlaw a religion; would never take the steps necessary to defeat such an ideology…”

This conversation occurs near the end of the book, and the reader is ready to fully understand it by then.

The book starts out with an interesting and provocative premise: Two supervisors at a university IT department find an online video giving instructions in Arabic showing step by step exactly how to make a bomb. It was a tutorial. They trace it and discover to their dismay the video was posted by someone at their university! And in the comments on the video, it said, “Brothers. I have posted this vid in the hopes that someone can translate it into English. Holy Jihad will not wait and we need to prepare. The materials are available and waiting as we speak.”

These two supervisors were not counterjihadists. They didn’t know anything about Islam or jihad. But the idea of someone showing Americans how to build bombs within the country to kill Americans really got under their skin. The more they thought about it, the more they felt motivated to do something about it. But what?

They eventually come up with the idea of making a video just like it, except for one small change: To alter the instructions so the bomb detonates while the bomb maker is constructing it!

I marked a huge number of passages in the book that I wanted to share, but now I don’t want to give them away and spoil the story for you. I would like to quote this little bit, however, to give you an idea of how the author weaves good, valid information into the narrative:

While the bomb tutorial had undeniably been the initial spark, the true turning point was the sniper video. Like a wormhole, it had sucked them in, transporting Jason and himself to another world. Within the week, an embedded link in an online article about a beating in Paris had led to another web site, this one tracking jihadist activity worldwide. He’d been amazed by the sheer number of attacks occurring on a daily basis. For that week alone there’d been thirty-six in various countries, with a body count of 221. For the month, 185 with 943 dead and 1,223 critically injured. The total since 9/11 had crested 14,000 in mid 2009. What would that be? — roughly? 71,000 dead and 92,000 seriously wounded? Digging deeper, it occurred to them that all over the world people were being killed in staggering numbers. And the West just couldn’t come to grips with it. The fact that The Religion of Perpetual Outrage claimed religious and minority status gave them immunity, at least as far as the major media and various governmental bodies were concerned.

According to the reports, Islam was misunderstood. Islamic scholars themselves clearly couldn’t articulate the actual peaceful words of the Prophet. The passages that exhorted coexistence with others — on a permanent basis — were assumed by all to be there, but the subject always seemed to get switched at the last moment, just as the question was about to be raised…

You can read The Martyr’s Prize for your own enjoyment. But I think we can also use it to help us educate our fellow non-Muslims. Reading it is like watching a good action movie; it grips your attention and won’t let go.

Some people don’t read much nonfiction, but they’ll read a good story, and this is fast-paced with a contemporary storyline and plot-propelling dialog — but it also delivers a motherload of information, and makes many good points. It may be a way to help educate a certain kind of people.

Read it yourself first, and then see who in your life might be interested in reading a story like this, and talk it up to those people. Loan your copy to them. It could help people really come to grips with what jihad is really about and what we’re up against.

In the preface, the author, Brooks William Kelley writes: “The concept of this book was a simple one really — to take stories ignored by the Western media and weave them together to form the plot of this book…”

He says, “In my writing, I’ve made it a point to use actual incidents as a basis for the story. Specifically, the ‘workplace accidents’ of 2008 and 2009 were instrumental in inspiring one of the main storylines of the book. For those who wonder whether such events in fact occurred, simply pick one and Google it.”

Kelley has done something really good here: He has given us a new way to reach people, and a way for all of us to more fully come to terms with our situation as non-Muslims.
